Red Shoe BistroIf you’ve done your research, you already know that there are lots of dining options in Key West. But it can be overwhelming for someone who hasn’t been around the block. Especially around Duval Street, which can oftentimes be hit or miss. And because every vacation day is precious, the last thing you want to do is to pick the wrong restaurant.

So here’s an inside tip and a sure bet you will never regret: Red Shoe Island Bistro. Located on Petronia Street, just steps away from the madness of Duval, this cozy, offbeat restaurant is heralded for its terrific seafood-centric menu; house specialties like the extraordinary Certified Black Angus Beef Stroganoff; and sensational greens like the Pear and Blueberry Vanilla Goat Cheese salad with fresh watercress and toasted walnuts.Red Shoe Island Bistro

Owners John Bobon and husband Chip Junod recently took over the reins at this local hideaway and continue to raise the bar for great food.

For starters, you don’t have to be a big fan of deviled eggs to revel in the Deviled Eggs and Scallops appetizer. Topped with four perfectly seared scallops balanced on a pool of signature lobster sauce, it’s a great prelude to more beautiful things to come.

Another “can’t miss” appetizer: the Lobster Roll Profiteroles with a classic lobster roll filling served inside delicate house-made profiteroles. The Crispy Pork Belly Crostinis, with ginger and sesame coleslaw and an avocado with lemon sauce, is also noteworthy.

Red Shoe Island BistroFor entrees, we’re totally hooked on the Seafood Medley: scallops, Prince Edward Island mussels, and Key West Pink shrimp, all served over fresh fettuccine with house-made tomato, shallot, and Boursin sauce.

If you’ve never tasted fresh yellow tail snapper, Red Shoe Island Bistro is the place to order it. This signature Bistro dish is a lovely melange of sautéed snapper filet with lemon and parsley sauce, paired with creamy parmesan topped risotto and sautéed asparagus. The inventive menu also shines with the Bistro’s Stuffed Poblano Pepper. Bursting with six Key West Pink Shrimp surrounded by House grits, the pepper amazes with other surprising ingredients, including cheddar cheese, dried capers, spinach, and a fabulous bed of Boursin cheese sauce.

BTW: Save room for the absolutely divine creamy lavender cheesecake. The sublime flavor and delicate, flaky crust make for a perfect ending.

The Red Shoe Island Bistro is open Monday through Saturday from 6 – 9 pm. Find it at 411 Petronia Street in Key West. Info: 305- 509-7271; redshoeislandbistro.com.

Trust me, this one’s a winner!
