What fuels man’s ongoing quest to explore under the sea?
Joe and Sally Bauer spent over forty years looking for the answer. During their respective medical careers, the doctor duo also pursued avocations as marine biologists, SCUBA divers, and diving historians.
In those four decades, the couple’s passion took them to virtually every corner of the world, where they amassed a treasure trove of diving relics. Their private collection eventually expanded to include contributions from more than 30 countries to diving history.
As their collection grew, so did their dream of sharing their underwater diving finds and fascinating stories with the rest of the world.
That dream became a reality in 2005 with the creation of The History of Diving Museum in Islamorada. Now home to the world’s largest collection of diving helmets, hand-operated air pumps, armored suits, lights, and other accessory gear, The History of Diving Museum also displays memorabilia, prints, photos, books, film, video, and more.
In all, the Museum has 14 exhibits reflecting over 4,000 years of “the quest to explore under the sea.” With interactive displays, a fun scavenger hunt, and an international collection that showcases equipment and pioneers from around the world, The History of Diving Museum will keep you riveted for hours.
Oh, and get this: on the third Wednesday of every month, the Museum stages its highly popular “Immerse Yourself!” series. This free presentation kicks off at 7 pm and features various guest speakers who cover topics from all aspects of the diving industry and marine environment.
BTW: Along with the core exhibits, the Museum also hosts two Featured Exhibits each year. Currently on display through December: “Diving in Pop Culture,” which explores all of the creative ways that diving has been incorporated into literature, advertising, film, games, music, collectibles, and more for the last 100 years.
