Underwater music festHave you ever traveled to an Underwater Concert before? If not, grab your flippers for the 42nd Annual Underwater Music Festival which splashes down on Saturday, July 11.
The quirky underwater concert, which rocks the boat from 10 am – 2 pm, takes place at Looe Key Reef in the National Marine Sanctuary — approximately six miles south of Big Pine Key.

Imagine floating among mystical mermaids and costumed musicians playing artist-sculpted mock instruments ranging from a “manta-lin” and “sea-phan flute,” to a “trom-bonefish” and “fluke-a-lele.” It truly is an underwater concert that will blow your fins off!

Underwater music fest 2Festivities kick off on Friday, July 10 at 6 pm with an opening party at Kiki’s Sandbar, a favorite waterfront hang at MM 29 Gulfside on Little Torch Key. Enjoy scrummy appetizers and tropical libations, make new friends, and discover some really fascinating facts about our precious reefs.

On Saturday, July 11, it’s time to don your favorite costume, grab your fins and splash down for a wild and wacky underwater concert you’ll never forget! Staged by Keys radio WWUS 104.1 FM, the wave of music resonates from Lubell Laboratory speakers suspended under boats positioned above the reef.

Underwater music festIt’s a whole lot of fun, but on a more serious note, the annual concert also promotes preserving the Keys’ unique coral reef ecosystem by incorporating diver awareness announcements and great tips on how you can enjoy the reef and minimize environmental impacts.

Many divers and snorkelers launch their boats from public ramps and marinas in the Lower Keys but you can also reserve space on boats run by local dive operators who have their own onboard costume parties.
