Andy ThurberIt’s all about memories of a simpler time, a time when immigrants, shrimpers, brawlers, artists and smugglers all mingled together on a remote island closer to Havana than Miami.

It’s those memories that are the driving force behind Andy Thurber’s art. One of Key West’s most beloved folk artists, this native son captures the local character and hidden gems that make Key West so wonderful. His vibrant watercolors include portrait-like images of local personalities and locations that come from both today’s Key West as well as from an older, more unrefined time.

Like his famous mentor, Key West folk artist Mario Sanchez, Thurber carries on a tradition of preserving the quaint, humorous, and sometimes gritty tales of days gone by. His forceful blending of a subject, color, and style make him one of Key West’s most in-demand artists.

On Saturday, October 23, Key West’s highly acclaimed Gallery on Greene is hosting a special art opening showcasing some of Thurber’s most interesting watercolors and hand-painted wood carvings, which tell the story of our island in the 1960s and 70s.

Andy Thurber is truly a remarkable folk artist, and this is one show that you don’t want to miss. It takes place from 5 – 8 pm at Gallery on Greene, 606 Greene St. Info: 305-294-1669; galleryongreene.com.
