Just how did Islamorada become the “Sportsfishing Capital of the World?” Legends of the Line – one of the fascinating permanent exhibits on display at the Keys History & Discovery Center in Islamorada, gives you the lowdown on how fishing in the Florida Keys morphed from a relaxing past time into a booming tourism industry.
The exhibit includes a very cool collection of historic photographs, two fishing poles used by President George H. Bush, grandson “Jebby,” along with a 46-inch touchscreen monitor where you can navigate your way through an intriguing list of famous anglers who frequented the Keys from 1915 through the 60’s and beyond…men like author Zane Grey, baseball Hall-Of-Famer, Ted Williams and President Herbert Hoover, as well as many legendary fishing captains and local characters who helped the Upper Keys develop into the “Sportsfishing Capital of the World.”
The Keys History & Discovery Center also boasts a state-of-the-art, 35-seat movie theater with “4-K Technology” which displays four times the detail of typical high definition devices. Local Islamorada resident and movie producer, Jon Landau (Avatar and Titanic) had a hand in the theater’s design and on special Film Nights, you can immerse yourself in classic movies like PT 109, The Rose Tattoo, Key Largo, True Lies and other movies that have been filmed in/or about the Keys.
You can check out Legends of the Line, along with several other awe-inspiring exhibits every Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 5 pm. The Keys History & Discovery Center is located at 82100 Overseas Highway, mile marker 82.1 oceanside, on the property of the Islander Resort.
FYI: The Center’s website, keysdiscovery.com, and Facebook page are both great ways to keep track upcoming activities, movies and new shows. For more info call 305-922-2237.
