If you’re into “One Night Stands,” then you best cancel any plans for Saturday, July 13
and prepare yourself for one hot night in Old Town Key West.
That’s when Studios of Key West is staging its annual “One Night Stand” event that has
the entire island all in a twitter. The much beloved 24-hour theater project promises two electrifying performances at 7pm and 9pm, showcasing the boundless creativity and camaraderie of local theater artists.
If you’re a newbie to “One Night Stand,” here’s how it goes: The foreplay begins the night before, as several groups of playwrights and directors team up to unleash their creative frenzy. After randomly drawing their casts of actors, each group races against the clock to craft four new 10-minute plays overnight. Yes, you read that right: each team has just 24 hours to produce an entire play. Imagine writing, rehearsing, and staging a production that fast!
“From the moment the writers draw casts from a hat until curtain call, it’s a whirlwind of collaboration,” says event organizer Elena Devers. “Over fifty talented individuals come together, sharing ideas, props, costumes, and stories to magically bring these plays to life.”
As the sun rises Saturday morning, playwrights rush to deliver freshly inked scripts to The Studios, where actors, directors, and artists eagerly take up the challenge. Throughout the day, actors immerse themselves in their roles; directors relentlessly rehearse their casts; and artists rush to create vibrant backdrops for their individual productions. In the meantime, dozens of volunteers assemble props, refine costumes and construct set pieces, culminating in two dynamic performances.
And then, before you know, it’s Showtime! With nerves tingling and adrenaline coursing, the performers take to the stage in front of a live audience. Icing the cake is local celebrity and emcee, Stephen Crane who presides over the unveiling of the island’s newest original theater.
