Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer, and with the fall season rolling in, it’s almost time to release the pumpkins. However, the scarecrows are not waiting.
This September, you can see all kinds of delightful straw people peering out from behind the fifteen acres of tropical plants and trees at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden. This lighthearted exhibit showcases scarecrows crafted from natural and recycled materials by local artists, students, and other community members.
The freestanding scarecrows are no more than 6 feet tall, so they can withstand outdoor weather conditions for the duration of the exhibit. Past entries range from traditional scarecrow figures to a colorful lionfish and a “bird creature” incorporating native vegetation.
Cash prizes are awarded in several categories: school-age individuals or groups, not-for-profit groups, businesses, amateur individuals, and creative professionals. Best in Show wins $100 and is chosen by garden visitors, so be sure to cast your vote!
