Labor Day marks the unofficial end of summer and with the fall season rolling in, it’s almost time to release the pumpkins.
However, the scarecrows are not waiting.
Starting on Wednesday, September 15, you can see all kinds of delightful straw people peering out from behind the 15 acres of tropical plants and trees at the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden.
Now in its second year, “Scarecrows in the Forest” is a a lighthearted exhibit showcasing scarecrows crafted from natural and recycled materials by local artists, students and other community members of recycled art creations.
The scarecrows are all freestanding, and no more than 6 feet tall so that they’re able to withstand outdoor weather conditions for the duration of the exhibit. Past entries have ranged from traditional scarecrow figures to a colorful lion fish and a “bird creature” incorporating native vegetation.
Cash prizes are awarded in each of three categories: school-age individuals or groups; not-for-profit groups; and businesses, amateur individuals and creative professionals. Best in Show wins $100 and is chosen by garden visitors so be sure to cast your vote!
Currently celebrating the 85th anniversary of its founding, the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is a unique open-air “living museum” and the only frost-free subtropical natural conservation habitat and native plant botanical garden in the continental United States.
Rich in biodiversity, it features two wetland habitats, national and state champion trees, two butterfly gardens, resident and migratory birds, seasonal flowers and many other attractions (including scarecrows!) for nature enthusiasts.
The “Scarecrows in the Garden” exhibit takes place from September 15 through November 30 and is on display daily from 10am to 4pm. All-day admission is $10 for adults and free for children under 12 when accompanied by an adult. Seniors and active duty or retired military pay just $7.
