One museum you won’t want to miss is Islamorada’s History of Diving Museum. Home to the world’s most extensive collection of diving helmets, hand-operated air pumps, armored suits, lights, and other accessory gear, The History of Diving Museum is a treasure trove of memorabilia, prints, photos, books, film, video, and more.
The Museum has 14 exhibits reflecting over 4,000 years of “the quest to explore under the sea.” With interactive displays, a fun scavenger hunt, and an international collection that showcases equipment and pioneers worldwide, The History of Diving Museum will keep you riveted for hours.
Here’s something you wont want to miss: Now through Wednesday, April 17 you can see “Dive Into Art – Coral Creations.” This limited-time exhibit features artistic creations from throughout the Florida Keys, including students from twelve schools, as well as pieces from skilled members of the Art Guild of the Purple Isles. The works focus on a theme of coral conservation, with educational interpretive provided by coral restoration practitioners.
Oh, and get this: the Museum stages its highly popular “Immerse Yourself!” series at 7pm on the third Wednesday of every month. It features guest speakers covering topics from all aspects of the diving industry and marine environment. This free presentation is coming up again on Wednesday, February 22, when you can “Immerse Yourself” with “John Date: Pioneer Helmet-Maker.” Dive Historian, Mike Babinski,shares the fascinating life and history of Canadian helmet-maker John Date. The only helmet-manufacturer in Canada at the time, this pioneer’s creations were used extensively during the late 19th century.
