Conch Republic PassportIt all began on April 23, 1982, when Key West residents staged a ceremonial secession from the US by launching a symbolic “attack” on a government official with a loaf of stale Cuban bread. While the secession may have been in jest, the movement lives on 38 years later, with residents flying the Conch Republic flag and carrying the Conch Republic passports.
Typically the celebration of Key West’s “independence” reaches a fury every April during the annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration.
But not this year. With COVID 19 wreaking havoc on many annual events,
festival promoters moved the 2020 festivities to November 27 – 30, with additional events planned throughout the new year. From raising the “The Conch Republic Colors” at Mallory Square to marking the end of storm season with a hurricane flag burning, this year’s event takes the wacky celebration to a whole new level.

“Secretary of State,” Captain Jim Gillian and “Master of Promotion,” Mark Certonio of Dolce Events, have put together an outrageous schedule of events. Included are a Royal Family Election & Investiture Party, Miniature Bed Race, Wearable Art Fashion Show, Rum Battle, Military Muster & Cocktail Party, Hometown Parade, and many more.
