When Key West’s favorite son, Jimmy Buffett, passed away last year, our tight-knit island community quickly came up with a plan to honor his legacy.
Not only was Buffett one of the world’s most popular music icons, but it was his 1977 anthem “Margaritaville,” that made him, as well as his former home in Key West, world-famous.
Welcome to the first annual “Just A Few Friends: Key West Favorite Son Celebration.”
The inaugural festival, which takes place over Labor Day Weekend, kicks off on Friday, August 30, with a State Proclamation for Jimmy Buffett Day and a Cheeseburger Contest Welcome Party on the beach.
On Saturday, August 31, you can enjoy walking tours, a 5K run/walk, and the Margarita Bar Crawl & Scavenger Hunt.
Sunday, September 1, begins with a Bubbles Brunch, Pre-Parties, and the not-to-be-missed Second Annual Line Procession. Duval Street will be closed for this Memorial Walking Parade, which will make three stops along the way, tributing Buffett’s life through music, stories, and his favorite things — rum, music, and stories. The parade culminates at Truman Waterfront Park, where you can enjoy a free “Friends of Jimmy” concert experience and festival activities.
The weekend celebration wraps up on Monday, September 2, with a libation-ladened “Farewell But Not Forgotten” Sunset Cruise.
You’ve just gotta love it — we know Jimmy will!
